Cultural conditioning is our first frame of reference in how we live, think and relate to others. The context of this presentation is to illustrate the challenges of relating to an Asian culture faced by an American /Italian dance movement therapist teaching in China in presence from 2013-2019 and then digitally due to Covid -19 from 2020 until today.
Bentuhua in Chinese means to localise, to indigenize – to understand culture within one particular place. Looking through a western cultural first frame of reference, the western eye, how did I prepare to teach in China and then how did I “localize” my teaching in order to both transmit the teachings and understand the students within their own culture? How to teach dance movement therapy / Authentic Movement/ Creative Movement within the Chinese culture.
