In Authentic Movement the practice of “witnessing” is centered on being mindful of the inner world of sensations, symbolic meanings and images, judgements and projections in order to embrace the self of the mover, in all of their expressions, somatic, kinetic, emotional, and cognitive. In contemporary psychoanalytic psychotherapy, the first goal is to accept the experience of the experience of trauma, without attempting to symbolize it or make it personally understandable or change its personal meaning. Our minds – under stress – need other minds and bodies to “see” and “decode” and “remember” the horror of the experience of trauma and also its survival. Only then, change can occur.
